Theory of Writing

Writing is a means used for communicating ideas and information to a targeted audience.  However, when writing, there are many aspects to take into account to express yourselves adequately. For instance, all writing incorporates the rhetorical situation into their writing. The rhetorical situation includes purpose, genre, a type of media, stance, context, and audience.  Additionally, grammar is another essential element when writing. Using proper grammar allows us to express ourselves in a way that is concise and understandable. The writing process for an essay also plays an important part, and this process involves outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. Overall, a combination of these aspects in an essay helps to enhance the writing quality

My theory of writing when coming into this class was that writing consisted of following a format and the rhetorical situation. Regarding the format, I was a custom to the introduction, body, and conclusion structure. When coming into this class, being grammatically correct did not seem necessary. To me, the most important part when writing an essay was portraying the reader your stance. However, my writing has evolved throughout this course. Throughout each assignment, I was able to develop and further my writing skills. In regards to my grammar, I was able to practice through worksheets and online discussion questions. The image below shows the punctuation worksheet and an online post that consisted of writing sentences by switching the verb and the subject.

These types of activities helped strengthen my grammar. To continue, through the writing assignments in this course, I was able to get familiar with APA citation and in-text citation. Before this course, the only citation format I was familiar with was MLA format and did not recognize an in-text citation. The left image shows my citations from the technical description assignment. The right image shows the Ashford University APA citing guidelines that I refer to when I am unfamiliar with how to cite an in-text citation.

In this course, I have also explored in writing and reading, a variety of genres. I wrote a memorandum, an analytical essay, a letter, a proposal, and a research paper through the writing assignments. Also, through the readings in this course, I have seen different writing styles that I would want to include in my writing. For example, below are some writing qualities that want to and have adapted.

The component that has contributed to my theory of writing most has been peer review. The peer view has allowed me to get feedback on how I can improve my grammar, structure, thesis statement, and more. By collaborating with my classmates, it had helped me in my writing process of revising and editing. Below are some examples of feedback I have received from classmates.

Overall, I feel that my writing theory has expanded and adapted to different styles and formats of writing. For instance, I previously mentioned how grammar did not seem important; however, in this course, I furthered my grammar skills and saw it was a critical writing component.

My theory of writing is applied to other writing situations, both inside and outside the classroom. Inside the classroom, your writing skills are put into practice through assignments and assist in my theory of writing. While outside the classroom, my theory skills can dedicate whether I receive a job offer. My theory of writing is essential when I am applying for summer jobs or revising my resume. Being able to express myself adequately by using proper grammar and revising my writing when submitting a job application is a must. Outside the classroom, the quality of your writing is used to represent you as an individual.
